A Prayer for Our Nation
This prayer will be offered up to "God," or "Lord." Please substitute this word for your deity or non-deity of choice.

Dear Lord, as a person who was educated for eight years in a Catholic school, St. Rose of Lima, in Freehold, New Jersey, the one thing that always stayed with me when the nuns and priests taught us about prayer was never to ask God for things for yourself. “God,” they said, “was not Santa Claus and not some fond uncle whose purpose in our lives was to fulfill wishes. God was the creator of all, the giver of life, and timeless — and all good, while also our final judge: Did you live a life good enough to be granted eternal life?
So, here goes, God, I will not bore you with the details. You know why I am here. (Yes, I know it’s been a long time since I last stood on my knees before my bed and asked for anything — to be precise, I did so on November 4th, 2024.) I am here because, in two and a half days, a dark and evil spirit will take over the strongest and so most dangerous country in the world. A man who has never lived by any standard of morality and who even once wondered if he was more popular and loved than you will take over our nation and lead us far astray from you, Lord.
He is the false prophet you warned us about, and while his wily ways did not fool half of our great country, the other half, the half with enough electoral power to put into the White House, has been wholly duped. They will let him into their houses, and invite him to not only dine with them on the flesh of their young, but they will offer up the innocence of their daughters and wives to him.
Dear Lord, many of us will remain strong and fight against the ignorance, heresy, and criminality they call normal and even holy. We will never give up believing that you, Lord, had more in mind for this great American nation when you sent our ancestors across that treacherous ocean centuries earlier. We survived slavery — barely — and a Civil War. The presence of this demon in the White House speaks to one inalienable truth: We are struggling to survive the Reconstruction Era. This was the time when the Northern efforts at reforming the misguided Southern culture were ended, and half the nation slipped back into a mentality of slave-owners and slaves yet again. To this day, the country cannot shake its original sin.
Dear Lord, the man-child who has taken control of our nation and lured millions into his cult has committed every sin your servants warned us never to commit. There isn’t a rule or suggestion on how we could live our lives more lovingly in commune with our neighbors that this man with his fake orange tint has not broken. He uses his power to get millions to hate. He mocks the weak and the handicapped.
Lord, I was always told the meek would inherit the Earth, but we see that the wealthiest citizens in our nation are getting remote controls to the planet while the rest of us become trapped in their webs of technology.
God, come on, we have come so far from when the poor were locked into the steerage compartments of ships and left to drown. We survived — barely — the Holocaust. Evil is rising across the globe, with monsters leading Russia, China, Iran, and Israel. They use their power to murder, imprison, lie, and lead millions astray.
And this, too, is happening in the nation whose power was always able to offset the worst tendencies of Russian, Chinese, German, Iranian, and Iraqi authoritarian leaders. We were always there to remind the evil-doers that sooner or later, they would be forced to deal with us — judgment would be passed, and it would be harsh. No more, though; now we will be the evildoers.
Unless you give someone the courage to end all of this for us, for you, Lord. Unless, you decide that his time is up, and you remove him — them — and we go back to serving your interests and even saving this planet.
Dear Lord, save us from his evil, strike down his mind, and steal his speaking ability. If not for us, then for our nation’s children and this world. America is too important to the world, so the prospect of this evildoer leading us astray will have consequences for the world that only you, Dear Lord, can fathom — but through which we will be forced to live.
