After Two Years of War, Putin Finally Lets Us All in on a Little Secret
Russia is fighting a 'war of independence' from…the West, it seems.
Who knew? Vladimir Putin came out yesterday and finally informed the world about why the war with Ukraine was started. If it weren’t Putin saying what he said, it would be shocking to most people. It was Putin, and so while most of us will take his words with a Salzburg-sized grain of salt, sadly, many Russians will accept the reason as the latest in the unfolding Gospel truth.
Russia, it seems, is fighting a war of independence. Russia, it turns out, is seeking to unshackle itself from being “dependent” on the West. I guess that is what he meant. If they want to be “independent,” then the suggestion is they were “dependent,” or am I missing something here?
Russia’s war with Ukraine is for its independence from America’s “unipolar” leadership of the world. Putin made these comments yesterday in front of the latest gathering of ministers and military types.
Many of the men listening to Putin ramble on, using colorful farmer’s slang about not being “lazy,” were shifting and sliding around in their seats, fighting the inevitable head drop into slumbering bliss — eyes shut and off the mind zooms on a magic carpet as it abandons the moment of lunacy unfolding before it. Putin droned on about how Russia had not chosen to defend itself against Ukraine — and the West — then Russia would already have been overrun and become another of Washington’s colonial conquests similar to the way the rest of Europe exists.
If Putin had not defended Russia, then the Western culture of gays, lesbians, and transgender people would be setting up communities in Russia, luring Russian children into all “sorts of perversions.”
It seems that before February 24th, 2022, Russia’s development was being hindered by the United States and its proxy army, Ukraine. Russia’s interests were being quashed by, I guess, Trump and then Biden. I can tell you that while living in Russia, I never felt this pressure. I saw a lot of help coming from the United States. I was living there when Russians had no food, and the “Bush legs,” millions upon millions of drumsticks, were sold to the hungry populace — the U.S. gave the chicken legs for free as humanitarian aid, and Russians then sold them.
Yes, the U.S. did comment on the morality of Russia’s brutal war against Chechnya, during which tens of thousands of civilians were killed by indiscriminate bombing — we lost our moral position, though, after our own war of aggression against Iraq began. Nonetheless, never did the U.S. trample on Russia’s right to self-governance, which Putin hinted at yesterday.
Putin called on all Russians and the governing bodies to accept this fact and live accordingly. Russia is fighting for its freedom from the oppression of the West, and “all laws must be aligned with this fact”— whatever that means.
I can say, though, that many Russians accept this line of thinking. Poor little-bitty Russia was once again prevented from being the best it could be by the big bad West. When will we learn?
