Men are not allowed to leave Ukraine now. If you have 3,000 euros, though, documents can be forged, and crossing into Poland is possible. The risk, however, is great. Get caught, and you will be sent to the front immediately. I am sure your comrades will also be informed about the desire to escape, also.
I am not judging the men who want to leave. Who wants to die on the front of a senseless war? Who wants to go into a meat grinder and wait for Russian artillery to find them? Many of the men of Ukraine have been fighting non-stop for two years. The toll on their physical and mental health is beyond comprehension. Leaving is the only way some can maintain their sanity. Like I said, I am not passing judgment on them.
Without revealing how I found out about the payments, I will say that I have met some people who know people who paid.
Escaping, as I wrote above, is a normal human reaction. What concerns me is the corruption that has rotted the body of Ukraine since the collapse of the Soviet Union is still set deep in the DNA of the Ukrainian body. The rampant corruption that permits men to pay officials to “look the other way” is the same disease that eventually led to February 24th, 2022. Russia has always been able to find Ukrainian patriots willing to sell out their country for money. Putin knows that even if Ukraine comes out victorious, there will always be someone somewhere willing to negotiate to sabotage Ukraine’s future efforts at creating distance from Moscow.
Corruption is alive and well in Ukraine. The men taking their chances to escape merely use the out that their country provides for them even though the nation’s fate lies in the hands of every defender. War has always created such “loopholes,” but unfortunately, these holes have weakened Ukraine for decades and will continue to do so until they are exorcised from the soul of this nation.
