Republicans Again Mock Us with a Sham Impeachment
Each day Republicans control Congress reminds me of those 'weirdest people you at Walmart' videos
The week began with Republicans in Congress trashing a bipartisan border control agreement that had been reached in the Senate. Before most had a chance to look at it, the cockroaches scampered about with thesauruses, looking up the cleverest ways to say they would never support it.
These are the same Republicans who have declared the most pressing problem for the nation is illegal immigration. These are the ones that tell us that as each hour passes without a resolution for how to strengthen border security, the nation is at risk of being overrun by terrorists. This is the same grouping of Walmart and trailer park misfits who are today voting in the House of Representatives to impeach a man, Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary because they say he failed to do anything about the immigration problem.
A bipartisan agreement has been reached in the Senate, and Walmart Republicans refuse to bring it up for a vote in the House.
Republicans are pressing forward despite the assessment of legal experts, including some prominent conservatives, that Mr. Mayorkas has not committed high crimes and misdemeanors, the constitutional threshold for impeachment. If they succeed, which would take near unanimity among the G.O.P. given the party’s tiny majority, Mr. Mayorkas would become the only sitting cabinet member to be impeached in American history.
The move is an escalation of Republicans’ efforts to attack Mr. Biden and Democrats over immigration, as the two parties clash over how best to secure the border during an election year when the issue is expected to take center stage in the presidential campaign (Republican-led House to Vote).
By morning, they are impeaching a man who has done nothing wrong. By night, they are killing a bipartisan agreement that could strengthen the security of the border and, in many ways, give them the political (tribal) victories they seek. The hypocrisy is off the charts.
Much of this attack on Mayorkas has been led by Marjorie Taylor Greene. If there is anyone in Congress who is a candidate for an annoying, weirdly dressed person from Walmart, Greene would be it. Greene’s attack on Mayorkas, however, is not just a vile, politically motivated assault against an upstanding professional who has broken no laws whatsoever; it is also yet again a kick directly to the balls of our nation’s institutions.
Greene and her Walmart thugs in Congress have turned one of the most potent weapons in Congress for dealing with corrupt, law-breaking politicians and impeachment, and turned it into a dime-store practical joke. It has been relegated to whoopie cushion status now, like so much more about our nation since the inmates got control of the asylum. Using the impeachment tool against Mayorkas is like bringing an Uzi to a thumb-wrestling match. Please feel free to add your metaphors and similarities in the comments section.
There is no place here for impeachment. The border issue is one that both parties have not dealt with for decades and the rejection of the bipartisan agreement proves this point. Rather than genuinely resolve this issue, the Walmart Republicans want to exacerbate it further to ring every ounce of political juice out of it.
Trump regards this as his winning campaign strategy so that they will do nothing, and the added imagery of an impeached secretary of homeland security only makes this a better one for him — better, that is, in the eyes of his MAGidiots. To anyone else paying attention, the farce unfolding in today’s Congress should be yet another reason for Americans not to vote for anything Republican in 2024.
The measure slated for a vote on Tuesday also would appoint 11 impeachment managers to argue the case against Mr. Mayorkas in the Senate, including Mr. Green and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, Republican of Georgia, who has led the charge to bring him up on constitutional charges and seek his removal. The group also includes Representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ben Cline of Virginia, Clay Higgins of Louisiana, Andrew Garbarino of New York, Michael Guest of Mississippi, Harriet M. Hageman of Wyoming, Laurel Lee of Florida, Michael McCaul of Texas and August Pfluger of Texas (Republican-led House to Vote).
Look at this bunch of lunatics. If these 11 impeachment managers were in one Walmart simultaneously, they would easily win, hands down, the “weirdest Walmart shoppers” trophy of all time.
Illegal impeachment has got to be the worst yet. The thing that grabs me is that it isn’t necessarily if justice takes over and ends the process it’s that it gives them a talking point that’s the farthest from the truth .Again we are witnessing “ lies for votes” with absolutely no consequences.
