Trump and His Supporters Talk as If He Never Was President
'If I get elected, I will do this,' he says over and over, but we all know he does…
Last year, a man in San Antonio was fired for playing golf during work hours.
Donald Trump spent 312 of his 1420 days as president playing golf. The cost directly and indirectly to the American taxpayer topped $144 million. Barack Obama played 312 times, but he was president four years longer.
Donald Trump loves to talk to his followers as if he were a newcomer to this political thing and given the chance, “Man-oh-boy, am I gonna shake things up.” When interviewed, his followers also speak in ways that indicate that Trump wasn’t president from 2017 to 2021.
Given the level of intellect of the average Trump supporter — and, yes, I know that by calling them stupid, I am not helping but if the shoe fits! — I am sure some don’t know that he was president. If you ever watch Jordan Klepper’s interviews with Trumpists at his rallies, you get a better sense of how dangerously stupid our country has gotten.
A dangerously misinformed housewife from Staten Island said, “If he gets elected, he will do wonders for our economy.” Why did he do it the first time?
Trump generally watches up to six hours of cable news each morning before appearing in the Oval. After some time spent “dealing with world matters,” it was off to lunch, maybe a briefing on live TV, and then back to residence to watch his performance. It is said that during this time, he would down Diet Coke and eat plates of French fries. The evening would be whiled away eating alone and watching more cable news and talk shows. The world became, for Trump, a virtual reality show, and he was its “Truman (The Truman Show).”
During the first seven months of COVID, when 200,000 Americans died, Trump hit the fairways 25 times. Eventually, because of the severity of COVID, the golf courses were closed. In Trump’s final year in office, 461,000 Americans died from COVID. It is estimated that had Trump not played his usual “this makes me look bad” political game with the epidemic, then 40 percent of those deaths could have been avoided — that means nearly 190,000 Americans should have survived the pandemic if not for Trump’s incompetence.
But remember, “If he gets elected, so much will get better in America immediately! We will be so tired of winning that we will welcome the occasional loss.”
Then, there is the laughable belief that Trump’s approach to illegal immigration somehow worked.
“Trump will solve the immigration problem and build the wall.”
The conservative Cato Institute says that not only didn’t the wall slow immigration, but it also increased the pace at which immigrants started to race toward America. Trump was successful, however, in slowing legal immigration. The bottlenecks that rippled through the system, along with the firing of thousands of federal employees responsible for processing legal immigrants, brought things to a standstill. In Trump’s final months, however, illegal immigration was surging and not caused by Biden.
So Trump believed the wall was working too and wasn’t needed everywhere. Regardless, if his $15 billion, 455‐mile border wall can be defeated by any small gap anywhere in it, it just goes to show the absurdity of the whole project because gaps can and are being made on a near‐daily basis.
The Trump border wall failed for all the predictable reasons. Immigrants used cheap ladders to climb over it, or they free climb it. They used cheap power tools to cut through it. They cut through small pieces and squeezed through, and they cut through big sections and drove through. In one small section in 2020, they sawed through at least 18 times that Border Patrol knew about in a month. They also made tunnels. Some tunnels were long, including the longest one ever discovered, but some were short enough just to get past the barrier (The Border Wall Didn’t Work).
The photo on the bottom left shows a hole big enough for a car to drive through. This hole was open for a whole month until it was discovered. The photo on the bottom right shows a hole made by inexpensive power tools, and The New York Times reported that thanks to the paved roads that led up the border from the U.S. side, the job for smugglers picking up immigrants has been made vastly more accessible.
I know it’s a lot to expect of our fellow countrymen and women. I mean, it was only four years, and sure, if your head was down and you were busy toiling away building a better future for you and your family, then it could be possible that you might forget that Trump was ever president. I mean, his presidency was so embarrassingly not typical that who could blame Trump supporters and MAGidiots for thinking that what they did see of Trump wasn’t just some sequel to The Apprentice?
And then, there are Trump supporters like these two gals whom Jordan Klepper interviewed outside of a Trump rally in Mississippi. When asked about January 6th, the confusion about that date’s significance removed the last hints that they were more informed than the average cat or dog.
“You mean election day?” One of them “sweetly” asked. They had no idea what happened on January 6th. The rest of the people at the rally knew about January 6th, but their comments are worth watching.
If you have a chance, take a look at this; it’s both funny and scary as hell.
The fact that many Americans seem to have forgotten or never known that Trump was already president gives me hope. When the campaign heats up and the Biden team starts really communicating their message — PLEASE START COMMUNICATING! — maybe just enough Americans will learn that Trump has recently been president.
And that he was the worst president in our history.
