Russians are livid. The cities, a small village, and a town that is about five villages lassoed together are either occupied or being attacked by the Ukrainian army. Oh, the outrage they feel. “See, Putin was right,” they say, finally feeling a sense of relief. Russians who, on a good day, don’t give a shit about their neighbors, let alone a stranger in need on the street, are now weighed down with grief and angst over the plight of their fellow citizens in the areas occupied by Ukraine — “it’s all faux emotion and drama, folks.”
Here is what Ukrainian troops are not doing in the settlements they control in Russia.
Commission Chair Erik Møse provided harrowing details on the findings to the Council, noting that in the Kherson region, “Russian soldiers raped and committed sexual violence against women of ages ranging from 19 to 83 years”, often together with threats or commission of other violations.
“Frequently, family members were kept in an adjacent room, thereby forced to hear the violations taking place,” Mr. Møse said (Rape and Torture by Russian Forces).
Ukrainian troops are delivering water to the elderly residents and carrying out welfare checks to ensure the safety of civilians who chose not to evacuate. In one video shown by news organizations, a Russian woman is hugging the Ukrainian soldiers to express her gratitude for their kindness. She looked bewildered that a complete stranger could be so nice to her.
Russia has tortured and arbitrarily detained people in occupied Ukraine, creating a “climate of fear” and suppressing Ukrainian identity, a UN report said on Wednesday. The report, which the UN human rights office said was based on more than 2,300 interviews, accused Moscow of “committing widespread violations” of human rights law (Russia Using Fear to Control Occupied Ukraine).
Currently, there are thousands of Ukrainian children living illegally in Russian families after having been stolen from the occupied territories. The Russian authorities removed the children from Ukraine in the early days of the war when the front lines were moving fast, and families sometimes ended up cut off from each other. The Russians claimed that the Ukrainians abandoned their kids, but there is no evidence of this — they were just stolen and regarded by Russia as war booty.
Nothing similar is happening in the Ukrainian parts of occupied Russia, though. Today, Russia is obliterating some of the occupied settlements, like the town of Sudzha, to punish the Ukrainians. A decision has seemingly been reached by the Russian military that any Russian citizens left in those towns and villages are either too old or too compromised to be worth anything to Russia. Also, if they are killed and the settlements destroyed, then Russia can sell that to the gullible and confused Russian nation: “Look at what those Kyiv Nazis did!”
As each interaction between Ukrainian soldiers and Russian citizens proves to be respectful, Ukraine further demonstrates how barbaric and uncivilized Russia is. The country worships a rat and considers rapists heroes worthy of emulation. It truly is a superfluous society.
