Welp, We Did It - Rather, They Did
And now, all of us will be victimized by their ignorance.
Let’s start this on a positive note: None of us are having our faces bitten by camels today. But that’s pretty much how I feel. At 4:40 a.m. (I am in Portugal), I watched as Pennsylvania was called for Trump. I got up, staggered to the kitchen, and took a German-made, homeopathic sleep aid. Quickly, the valerian cut through the anxiety, and I tumbled off to a sound (120-minute sleep).
As I lay in bed, staring incredulously at the news on my phone, I marveled at how the “close” election had turned into a red wave the size not seen since Reagan crushed Walter Mondale in 1984.
I am not going to bore you with the reasons why this happened. I am not going to blame my beloved President Biden. I will save this analysis for a later date, after the shock has worn off and my feet have returned to the earth. As of this moment, one cup of coffee into our “new world order,” I feel completely as if I were one of Marc Chagall’s flying figures.
Alas, I am not, and soon the tethering process will occur. I will become a citizen of a fascist United States of America. Fortunately, I don’t live there now, but unfortunately, America’s influence is so significant that there is really no place to hide. The ignorance that prevailed yesterday — don’t look to me to offer any unifying words, please — is dangerous because of its potency and reach.
November 5th, 2024, proved to the world that the American education system is broken. Men with only high school educations came out in droves. They chose toxic masculinity — albeit founded on genuine cowardice — over commonsense, and put, an understanding of what America stands for, or, I guess it would be more correct to say, “used to stand for.”
They did this, dear readers. No one will really care much when they are thinking about how “America” has lost its mind. Others will lump us into that pile of intellectually stunted pro-Trump voters. All of us will be blamed for the extremism that now is no longer confined to rhetoric but will be put into practice. When the prices begin to climb because of Trump’s destructive tariffs, and when wages and jobs get cut because corporations are more interested in investing in stock buybacks, this same ignorant mass of pro-Trumpers will grow anxious and look for scapegoats.
Tragically, because they aren’t educated and lack the most basic of skills for critical thinking, they will not realize that the degrading situation is not being caused by transgender women in sports, gay marriage, immigrants, or Biden, but by the felon, they just chose to lead America into the future.
Donald Trump will lead us into the future, and it will be a dark and chaotic one filled with anger, rage, hate, racism, and economic hardship. Remember, although this changes nothing now, they did this, not us.
The world is no longer laughing at America and Trump. The world fears a fascist America and a Donald Trump presidency with absolutely no guardrails and the full power of the U.S. Congress backing his every Tweet.
It’s time to get used to looking at this face and becoming part of his stream of consciousness again. But, if there is a God, maybe we won’t need to listen to this declining fascist for much longer. Then, our nightmare will really begin as JD Vance becomes our president.
I am so embarrassed to be an American today. The knuckle-dragging, misogynistic, racist electorate has made us the laughingstock of the world… Not that I have any strong feelings about it.
